With the technology available at the time of the creation of these CD-ROMs (1993-5), in order to have as much full-motion video as possible on each disc, the frame size of the actual moving image has to be small relative to the total screen. To enhance the experience this moving frame is embedded in a large still image in such a way as to align as seamlessly as possible.
This was an interim approach on the way to the implementation of compression technologies that now allow full-frame full-motion interactive video on DVD, but often effectively approximates that experience.
Some characters, however, perform with more bodily motion
than others, which can lead to distracting misalignments. It was decided
in these instances to opt for naturalness of performance over seamless integration
of the moving frame within the still image. At these moments the creators
beg your patience and understanding.
